VNA's skilled cardiac program was developed in 1993 to meet the needs of medical and post-surgical cardiac patients. The program serves more than 700 heart patients each year, providing more than 13,000 visits into patient's homes. An experienced, cardiac-trained registered nurse works with the physician, patient, and family members to ensure that short and long-term goals are being met, through an individualized treatment plan for each patient.
VNA nurses are available 24 hours a day to all areas of the Central Coast to assess chest pain, heart and lung sounds, respiratory difficulties, and wounds and provide the necessary physician-ordered care. Using standardized educational programs, patients are taught healthy heart living, how to care for themselves following cardiac procedures and surgeries, and are given knowledge about the cardiac drugs that have been prescribed.
The VNA team offers registered nurses for assessment and teaching, dietitians for nutritional counseling, physical therapists, occupational therapists, home health aides, and behavioral health nurses if needed.
Cardiac care through the VNA team is reimbursed by Medicare, Medi-Cal, private insurance, private pay, and offers sponsored care for those patients who have no insurance or funds, within available VNA resources as provided by generous gifts from the community.
