Community Services / Immunizations

Because of its strong commitment to community health awareness, the Central Coast Visiting Nurse Association offers a number of services under VNA Community Services, with Andrea Zoodsma, RN as clinical supervisor. VNA works closely with the Monterey County Health Department and with Dr. Gary Grant, VNA medical director, to coordinate these efforts.

EMPLOYEE WELLNESS PROGRAM

Employees are your most valuable asset, so the VNA encourages you to do what you can to protect that investment. Lifestyle changes and referral for medical care as a result of a Wellness Program can make a difference in employee well-being, productivity and the company bottom-line.

VNA Community Services offers an Employee Wellness Program to you and your employees. Experienced VNA Registered Nurses will be on-site to test cholesterol, blood glucose and blood pressure. Health clinics can be successfully held during staff meetings, annual employee picnics, health fairs, change of shift and insurance enrollment periods.

Lifestyle changes and referral for medical care as a result of a Wellness Program can make a difference in employee well-being, productivity and the company bottom-line. Wellness screenings can be scheduled on-site for your valued employees.

CHOLESTEROL AND DIABETES TESTING

Diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and obesity can all lead to an increased occurrence of coronary artery disease. You may be at increased risk if there is a family history of premature coronary heart disease (before age 55 for men and age 65 for women), if your cholesterol is greater than 200, if your blood pressure is elevated, or if you have high blood glucose (diabetes).

VNA can provide a painless, fast and easy test ... you'll get results right on the spot, in five minutes. It may be the best $40 you've spent ... for your life! The VNA nurse will carefully examine test results to determine your risk for coronary heart disease.

Walk-in clinics to test cholesterol and blood sugar are scheduled periodically, and will be announced on this site, in the public news media, and on the VNA immunization information line at 831-648-3777. Or, individual appointments can be arranged.

IMMUNIZATION CLINICS

MENINGITIS DISEASE CLINICS

Do you know someone 11-24 years old? Is he or she protected from meningococcal disease - which can kill an otherwise healthy young person in 48 hours or less? It's scary, and especially for students nearing High School graduation or returning to college.

But there IS a vaccine against it - and VNA is scheduling clinics to protect teens from meningococcal disease. CDC recommends children ages 11, 12, 15 and college freshmen get the vaccine.

Students under the age of 18 who will not be accompanied by a parent must bring written parental consent to receive immunizations. Click on the links below for the forms which must be printed, signed and brought to the clinic site:

Tetanus and Diphtheria Immunization Prepayment/Consent Form

Meningococcal disease is a serious bacterial infection that can infect the blood or areas around the brain and spinal cord. Infection can lead to brain damage, disability and rapid death. Each year, of the approximately 3,000 cases of meningococcal disease in the U.S., about 400 cases will result in death.

Meiningococcal disease is spread through social behaviors involving close personal contact such as sharing drinking glasses or water bottles, kissing, smoking, or being in crowded living situations such as dormitories.

The disease often begins with symptoms that can be mistaken for other common viral illnesses, such as the flu. However, meningococcal disease can get worse very rapidly and can kill within 48 hours. One in five people who survive will suffer permanent disabilities such as limb amputation, severe scarring, brain damage and hearing loss.

Meningococcal disease rates begin to rise during adolescence and peak between the ages of 15 to 24 years, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) now recommends meningococcal vaccination for adolescents 11 to 12 years old and for teenagers upon entry to high school or college. Many states, including California, have enacted legislation mandating that information about meningococcal disease and the availability of a safe and effective vaccine must be sent to college and high school students, children attending camp, and their parents.

The nonprofit Central Coast Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) is leading the campaign to get the word out about meningococcal disease and its prevention. Information is distributed at local high schools and vaccine clinics will be held on campuses, at the VNA office or in private homes during student gatherings.

For more information, call VNA Community Services at 831-648-3777.

 TRAVEL HEALTH AND IMMUNIZATION CLINICS

VNA is proud to be known as a leading community provider of immunizations. All immunizations are offered at VNA's cost, which is competitive with other charges in the community.

It's a different world "out there". So before you go, get in the know. When you know what to watch for, and how to take care of yourself - especially traveling overseas - you're on the road to a safer, healthier trip. Be wise ... Immunize!

VNA's Travel Health and Immunization Clinic benefits the entire community. Four to six weeks before departure, consult VNA for the most up-to-date facts. VNA nursing staff, specializing in travel health, will provide pre- and post travel counseling, immunizations, and assess travelers for health and safety risks.

VNA can research individual itineraries for destination-specific risks and design a customized prevention plan for you, the traveler. VNA's global immunization guide can help you know which immunizations are recommended in the area you will be traveling, as well as tips about watching for specific diseases, insects, water, and weather conditions.

Want to know the Top 10 Travel Tips?? Travel consults and immunizations are available by appointment. Just call the VNA Community Services information line at 831-648-3777.

Fast facts about international travel:

  • In 2003, over 32 million US residents traveled to international destinations including developing countries throughout the Caribbean, Latin America, Asia and Africa.
  • Many travelers do not get immunized before leaving the U.S., putting them at risk of contracting (and bringing home!) life-threatening diseases including hepatitis A, meningitis, typhoid fever, yellow fever, and rabies.
  • Travelers may be exposed to a variety of pathogens and risks, and 20 to 70 percent of people report some health problems while traveling. Overall, during international travel, 1 to 5 percent of travelers seek medical attention.
  • The World Health Organization (WHO) advises travelers to "... consult a travel medicine clinic or personal physician 4-6 weeks before departure if the travel destination is one where exposure to any vaccine-preventable diseases may occur." If you're not sure, call VNA!

PUBLIC INFLUENZA CLINICS

As part of our commitment to wellness in the community, VNA offers a flu shot program each fall in collaboration with the Monterey County Health Department. The injections help to reduce the incidence of influenza, which can be particularly serious for the elderly, and persons of any age with chronic medical conditions.

Shots are given by nurses at various locations in Monterey County and San Benito County during the months of October, November and December. The public, 18 years of age and older, are welcome at all clinics. Flu shots are a covered Medicare benefit or $30.00. If medicare will be paying, please bring your Medicare card with you.

Pneumonia and tetanus shots are also available at all clinics. Pneumonia shots are a covered Medicare benefit or $45.

FLU PANDEMIC

Although the Avian Influenza (Bird Flu) has not been detected anywhere in the United States, planning is already underway IF a potential Avian or other influenza epidemic might occur on the Central Coast. Planning is being based on identification of persons with special needs, such as the elderly, disabled, and people with limited English language skills, to ensure everyone's needs are included in the response plan. VNA would be responsible for operating vaccine clinics.

VNA Community Services is working closely with the Monterey Public Health Department in this planning process. As more information becomes available, it will be posted on this website and through the area news media.
