Diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and obesity can all lead to an increased occurrence of coronary artery disease. You may be at increased risk if there is a family history of premature coronary heart disease (before age 55 for men and age 65 for women), if your cholesterol is greater than 200, if your blood pressure is elevated, or if you have high blood glucose (diabetes). VNA can provide a painless, fast and easy test ... you'll get results right on the spot, in five minutes. It may be the best $40 you've spent ... for your life! The VNA nurse will carefully examine test results to determine your risk for coronary heart disease. Walk-in clinics to test cholesterol and blood sugar are scheduled periodically, and will be announced on this site, in the public news media, and on the VNA immunization information line at 831-648-3777. Or, individual appointments can be arranged.
IMMUNIZATION CLINICS
Do you know someone 11-24 years old? Is he or she protected from meningococcal disease - which can kill an otherwise healthy young person in 48 hours or less? It's scary, and especially for students nearing High School graduation or returning to college. But there IS a vaccine against it - and VNA is scheduling clinics to protect teens from meningococcal disease. CDC recommends children ages 11, 12, 15 and college freshmen get the vaccine. Students under the age of 18 who will not be accompanied by a parent must bring written parental consent to receive immunizations. Click on the links below for the forms which must be printed, signed and brought to the clinic site: Meningococcal disease is a serious bacterial infection that can infect the blood or areas around the brain and spinal cord. Infection can lead to brain damage, disability and rapid death. Each year, of the approximately 3,000 cases of meningococcal disease in the U.S., about 400 cases will result in death. Meiningococcal disease is spread through social behaviors involving close personal contact such as sharing drinking glasses or water bottles, kissing, smoking, or being in crowded living situations such as dormitories. The disease often begins with symptoms that can be mistaken for other common viral illnesses, such as the flu. However, meningococcal disease can get worse very rapidly and can kill within 48 hours. One in five people who survive will suffer permanent disabilities such as limb amputation, severe scarring, brain damage and hearing loss. Meningococcal disease rates begin to rise during adolescence and peak between the ages of 15 to 24 years, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) now recommends meningococcal vaccination for adolescents 11 to 12 years old and for teenagers upon entry to high school or college. Many states, including California, have enacted legislation mandating that information about meningococcal disease and the availability of a safe and effective vaccine must be sent to college and high school students, children attending camp, and their parents. The nonprofit Central Coast Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) is leading the campaign to get the word out about meningococcal disease and its prevention. Information is distributed at local high schools and vaccine clinics will be held on campuses, at the VNA office or in private homes during student gatherings. Planning is being based on identification of persons with special needs, such as the elderly, disabled, and people with limited English language skills, to ensure everyone's needs are included in the response plan. VNA would be responsible for operating vaccine clinics. VNA Community Services is working closely with the Monterey Public Health Department in this planning process. As more information becomes available, it will be posted on this website and through the area news media. For 10 Things Your Family Needs to Know About the Avian Flu, CLICK HERE.
