Volunteer Program

An Important Job...

Clinical staff from the non-profit VNA and Hospice make more than 80,000 home visits each year to patients needing their care - and there are important roles for community volunteers to provide both program and administrative support. VNA programs operate throughout Monterey and San Benito counties, stretching from Camp Roberts up to South San Jose, and from the ocean inland to the San Benito county boundry.

Whether it is a young mother learning to care for a newborn, a family struggling with cancer, a person fighting the AIDS virus, or an isolated elder, all benefit from VNA care regardless of their income, illness or insurance. There is meaningful work for volunteers to accomplish in these important programs, bringing your skills, talents, excitement and commitment to VNA programs.

Established in this region in 1951, the Visiting Nurse Association is the oldest and largest home health agency in Monterey and San Benito counties. As a non-profit organization, VNA provides care to all who are in need, within available VNA resources as provided by generous gifts from the community.

Throughout the VNA and Hospice programs, volunteers also can provide vital clerical help, such as filing and answering phones. If there is a particular area of interest to you, please call that particular office and discuss it. They will help you complete the simple process through VNA Human Resources at (831) 648- 4213 to "sign up" and help!

Several VNA programs regularly benefit from important volunteer assistance:

HOSPICE: volunteers are trained to provide support and companionship to hospice clients and their families. The VNA Hospice program welcomes as volunteers all persons aged 18 and older who have successfully completed an interview process, an orientation session and 38 hours of training.  For more information contact Joseph Lumello, M.A., VNA Hospice Volunteer and Bereavement Coordinator, at 831-758-8243 ext 3062.  Internship opportunities are available to CSUMB students enrolled in the university's Department of Health, Human Services & Public Policy-Collaborative Health and Human Services program.

ADULT DAY CENTERS: volunteers lend valuable assistance to the VNA professional staff at the Adult Day Centers at 45 Plaza Circle in Salinas, 200 Coe Ave. in Seaside, and at 871 Jessie Street in Monterey. Volunteers help with crafts, sing-a-longs, holiday parties and other important activities to serve the needs of adults impaired by stroke, Alzheimer's disease, or other conditions associated with aging.

FLU CLINICS: held each October and November, volunteers play a vital role in registration of clients, handing out instruction sheets and assisting participants in completing forms.

FUND DEVELOPMENT: office needs willing volunteers to help with special events, mailings and other projects.

Other opportunities arise throughout the year, or you may have special skills you would like to use to help VNA ... so please let us hear from you!
