Zostavax vaccine to prevent shingles:
Zostavax is a new immunization available against the
painful skin rash, shingles, and is now available from
VNA Community Services. The new vaccine was licensed in
2006 and, in trials, prevented shingles in about half of
people 60 years of age and older. Shingles, or herpes
zoster, is a disease caused by the same virus that
causes chickenpox. After you have had chickenpox, that
virus remains inactive in your body in certain nerve
tissue. The virus can resurface as people age -- and
results in shingles.
Shingles is a painful skin rash, often with fluid-filled
blisters that can take 2-4 weeks to crust over and heal,
and pain that can last for months or even years. More
specific information about the new vaccine can be
obtained from your doctor or the VNA Immunization
Information line at 831-648-3777, where
appointments can be made for the Zostavax vaccination.
Gardasil vaccine to prevent HPV (cervical cancer):
Cervical cancer is the second leading cause of cancer
deaths among women around the world, and is caused by
genital HPV (human papillomavirus). However, an HPV
vaccine (Gardasil) is available from VNA that can
protect against most cases of cervical cancer and most
genital warts.
There are about 40 types of HPV. Most HPV infections go
away on their own, but every year in the U.S. about
10,000 women get cervical cancer and 3,700 die from it.
That’s why it is important for girls to get HPV vaccine
before their first sexual contact, according to the U.S.
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. For these
girls, the vaccine can prevent almost 100% of disease
caused by the four types of HPV targeted by the vaccine.
The vaccine, available from local physicians, the Public
Health Department and the VNA, is given in a three-dose
series and may be given at the same time as other
vaccines. For more information or to schedule an
appointment for the vaccine, call the VNA Immunization
Information line, 831-648-3777.
